What a fabulous start to the year we have had back in Class 1! Even with Miss Davies feeling poorly the first week back, the children have progressed incredibly.
It has been wonderful to be back at school and the children have got really stuck into this term's topic 'Once upon a time'. We have explored a number of different traditional tales this term already, including the Enormous Turnip, Jack and the Beanstalk, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and this week has been based all around Little Red Riding Hood. The children are becoming more familiar and confident with the structure of Traditional Tales and last week created their very own giant characters, some friendly, some really not! The children are also doing a phenomenal job with their reading, all striding with confidence at letter and sound recognition and many of them blending fantastically, adding more flow to their reading, amazing!
In Mathematics the children have been working very hard at measuring, using equipment like metre sticks and blocks to help us measure objects and people not only in our classroom, but also all around the school. We don't think Mrs Bullock knows we snuck in to measure her comfy chair last Thursday, sshh! I was blown away by the vocabulary used by the children as well as them sharing some fantastic problem solving thinking whilst on their measuring hunt. Last week we worked very hard at telling the time, creating our very own watches and huge chalk clocks on the playground, we even used our own bodies as the minute and hour hands to make not only o'clock times, but also some half past times too, well done! This week we have been thinking about that very tricky word 'addition' and what it really means, developing the children's abilities to work practically to more mental maths work; you're all trying so hard reception children, keep it up!
In other areas of learning such as Science we have been closely researching electricity and the safety required around it. I must say I feel very safe in the classroom now since the children have done an electricity check adding 'Do not touch' signs to all the sockets around the room. Great thinking reception! In Art the children have been exploring the technique of printing through a variety of art designs, creating wallpapers, wrapping paper and this week we created a huge printing activity which maybe involved just a little bit of mess! So much fun though!
We are so lucky here at Eastnor to have plenty of out of the classroom opportunities, this term we not only get to enjoy swimming, but also welly walk. We were not put off by the weather last Thursday, wrapping up warm and putting on our waterproofs! Rev Joan has so much local and environmental knowledge to share with us and there were many wonders waiting to be discovered across on the castle grounds. We even learnt how to tell how old a tree is... I wonder if reception children can remember! At swimming the children are doing a fantastic job, really supporting one another and having bundles of fun in the water, even if that does mean splashing Miss Davies and Wendy the coach!
Well done to each and every one of the children in Reception, you really are an exceptional class and I feel prouder and luckier everyday to be your teacher! Keep up the amazing work you are doing as well as keeping those cheeky smiles through these wintery months.
