The aim of Science teaching at Eastnor is to give all children a strong understanding of the world around them; specifically in our local environment which is an AONB site which teaches our children to value the world around them. Science encourages pupil’s enthusiasm, fosters their curiosity and creativity and develops their ability and skills to appreciate the world in which they live. It aims to stimulate a child’s curiosity in finding out why things happen in the way they do. It teaches methods of enquiry and investigation to stimulate creative thought.
At Eastnor we encourage children to investigate and ask scientific questions and begin to appreciate the way science will affect their future on a personal, national, and global level. Our Forest School site brings their learning to life and allows them to carry out scientific inquiry in a challenging and safe way.
Our curriculum is in conjunction with the aims of the National Curriculum which provides breadth and ambition. In Science our intent is for pupils to:
At Eastnor we teach inter-connected lessons that capture the children’s imagination which enables them to identify patterns of information between subjects that will help to enforce key knowledge. The teaching of science links history and the world around us whilst learning about significant scientists using a range of skills including observations, planning and investigations, as well as being encouraged to question the world around them. The children are challenged in each year group and build on the progress they have made which ensures a secure and deep understanding in our ever changing world.
We recognise the importance of Science in every aspect of daily life. Our Science Curriculum facilitates sequential learning and long-term progression of knowledge and skills. Teaching and learning methods provide regular opportunities to recap acquired knowledge through high quality questioning, discussion, modelling and explaining to aid retrieval and the beginning and end of a lesson or unit. This enables all children to alter their long-term memory, know more, remember more and be able to do more as scientists.
